Notes: AU for the series 3 finale.
A door appears immediately after Mitchell’s ashes have sunk into the fibers of the flowered carpet beneath the grey soles of her boots.
Annie doesn’t think twice; she runs.
George and Nina are calling out for her, but she can’t look back. No, if she looks back, she’ll second guess herself and she can’t do that now. Annie has to rely on her instincts and right now they’re telling her to just go.
Mitchell swore they'd be together for eternity, and she’s not about to let him go back on that promise.
.
The afterlife isn’t the same. Everything is darker and colder and Annie can actually feel it. She shivers, pulling her cardigan closer as she roams the endless corridor, searching for something that seems like a sign that she’s getting closer. Every now and then she hears screams and drums, but she doesn’t let anything deter her. Annie is determined. Mitchell came all this way for her and she’ll be damned if she doesn’t do the same for him.
She can recall Mitchell saying she saved him, but that isn’t true. She never saved him. She couldn’t, he was too far gone for her to even reach. Part of Annie hates him. She despises him for what he’s done, not only to her, but to George and Nina. So many lies, so many awful lies and there are moments when she wonders if anything was real, but then she feels it, feels their love and she knows it was. It is. She loves him. Annie loves him enough to walk through this desolate place and bring him home.
And she will. Annie won’t stop until Mitchell is in her arms once again. When that happens, because she is sure it will, she’ll never let him go.
Everything is colder, but not as dark. There are flashes of light here and there, although they don’t make Annie feel any better. The heavy feeling of despair weighs down upon her and there are moments when she finds it difficult to keep moving on, but she pushes herself that much more when it happens. Annie’s never been one to give up. Not in this life. She’s not the same weak girl that allowed a man to tell her what to do and how to dress and how to feel.
This life, her real life, is hers and her choices are her own and no one will tell her differently. It’s why she hasn’t looked back. It’s why she keeps going forward. It’s why she’ll never give up. All of this is her choice and she will never go back on it. She’s strong and she has enough love inside of herself to make it through this. She isn’t jaded. Her past does not influence her present or her future.
Owen wasn’t love. Owen was control and weakness and abuse.
Mitchell is love. Mitchell is her love.
Mitchell is forever and Annie will promise him the same when she finds him.
.
And she does find him.
Of course she finds him. Annie has known she would since she walked through the door.
Mitchell is in a room of red, of heat, of sorrow and regret. He is pale, paler than she’s ever seen and when her fingertips graze the skin of his hand, he’s as cold as ice.
He is in death, just as she was, but she will pull him out of it.
“Mitchell, sweetheart, we need to go,” she whispers, her lips pressing to his forehead.
“You shouldn’t have come,” he roughly tells her as he looks up, his tired eyes meeting hers.
“I love you,” she says simply. It’s really that simple. Annie loves him, so she’ll save him from this.
“You shouldn’t,” he sighs.
“And yet, I do,” she says.
Mitchell’s fingers lace in between hers and the drums grow louder around them.
“We need to go now,” Annie whispers urgently.
Mitchell doesn’t answer her, but he does allow her to pull him along. They’re running soon, faster and faster through the darkness. It doesn’t matter that Annie can’t see what’s ahead; she knows it’s better than what they’ve left behind.
.
They’re still holding hands when they return to the living world. Annie finds it strange how different Mitchell feels to her, but she says nothing about it. They need to get home. George and Nina must be worried and Annie knows the stress isn’t good for Nina’s pregnancy. She looks over at Mitchell beside her, though, and he looks different just like he feels different and it’s all very strange.
When home comes into view, Mitchell is hesitant, but Annie pulls him along rather easily.
George opens the door before they’re even close to it and then he’s running and embracing Mitchell and Annie knows for sure this was all worth it. Nina is at the door, a hand protectively placed upon her growing stomach and despite it, Annie smiles. She’s so full of happiness and love and hope and she doesn’t care about much else. How can she when she has Mitchell back? She got him back.
After, George ushers them in and Nina pats Mitchell’s shoulder before excusing herself. Mitchell still says nothing, but they are in his room and George is downstairs with Nina while Annie awkwardly stands and wonders if she should give Mitchell time to himself. It’s not every day that you’re rescued from hell.
“Stay,” Mitchell whispers as Annie’s fingertips touch the doorknob. “Please stay, Annie.”
Annie swallows, but turns and sits down beside Mitchell on his bed. How many times have they been this way? How many times have they lain upon this very bed and embraced and kissed and touched one another? Annie can’t think of a number, but she wants all of that again. She wants all of that and more. She wants to be in love and feel happiness and ecstasy and she wants to fight and make up and laugh at things that are only funny to the two of them. Most of all, she just wants Mitchell to never leave again.
“Stay forever,” Annie whispers against Mitchell’s shoulder. “Promise you won’t ever leave me like that, Mitchell. Promise me.”
“I can’t,” he says, his voice thick and rough.
“You swore to me we’d be together for eternity,” she goes on, choosing to ignore his negativity.
“I’m wrong about plenty,” he says. “All that I’ve done is proof of that.”
“Were you wrong about loving me?” she asks, lifting her head up. Mitchell looks at her sharply, their eyes locked intensely.
“Never,” he answers passionately. “I love you more than I thought was possible. I love you in ways I can’t describe and in ways that I don’t know yet, ways I'll probably never know.”
“So promise me again,” she persists. “I want you forever. You have me forever.”
“Annie, sweetheart, you deserve so much better,” Mitchell sighs, his gaze falling down to their hands that have come together again.
“I want you,” she says. “I just want you.” Annie kisses his forehead, and Mitchell looks up at her again. His free hand lifts up to her face, his knuckles brushing across her cheek. Her entire body is on fire from something so simple.
“Forever,” he murmurs. “You and me, Annie. Whatever I’ve got to face, I want you with me forever.”
Annie finally smiles like she’s wanted to since she found him. “There’s quite a lot to face now,” she says.
Mitchell chuckles and nods, then brings their hands up, kissing her knuckles. “I know,” he says. “I was desperate before. I gave up when I should’ve just turned to you. I was afraid. I didn’t want you to despise me.”
“I love you,” she reminds him. “We can get through this. I need you here. There’s so much to do. There’s so much to get through. It’s always been us and George. We need you here. I need you here, Mitchell.”
“Annie,” he breathes out. “I won’t go. I swear it. I won’t lie and I won’t leave.”
“Promise?” she asks, leaning in until there’s not much space left between them.
“I promise,” Mitchell declares before kissing her.
The connection they share sparks and heat spreads rapidly through her entire being as their lips press together. It’s unlike anything she’s felt before, but she isn’t afraid. She welcomes this new feeling and this new future.
“You saved me,” Mitchell whispers after their kiss has ended and their foreheads are pressed together. Annie’s eyelashes flutter before she closes her eyes and breathes Mitchell in. In this sweet moment, everything is perfect and although she is aware that they have so many more obstacles to face, the fact that Mitchell is right here in her arms is enough to leave her at peace.
“We saved each other,” she says. “And we always will.”
